About Carnival (Venice)
Famous for elaborate masks and costumes dating to the 12th century. Masks allowed people of different classes to mix freely. The plague doctor mask with its long beak is iconic. Napoleon banned it in 1797 and it was revived in 1979. The most beautiful mask wins the contest on St Marks Square.
